Marketing to Environmentalists
The environmental movement is huge and diverse. A large number of
values fall under the term "environment."
- Preserving endangered species.
- Preserving pristine wilderness.
- Preserving wild recreational areas.
- Clear air.
- Quiet neighborhoods.
- Less traffic.
- Less noise in general.
- Clean water.
- Preserving wild rivers.
- Scenic beauty in general.
- Maintaining a natural climate.
Environmentalism is about more than worrying about environmental disaster. It is about beauty and quality of life. These are positive values that are often
ill served by our current market due to externalities.
Simplistic libertarianism fails to optimally preserve/provide
these values. On the other hand,
properly tweaked libertarianism can do a wonderful job of preserving/providing
these values.
We can do a better job than the socialists at environmentalism if we try.
On the other hand, if we imitate the conservatives and spend our efforts trying
to debunk environmentalism, we will simply create enemies. If we make simplistic
statements such as "the government is the biggest polluter," then we look
silly. (The government is the biggest single entity!
Of course it is a big polluter. But is it bigger than the sum total pollution
of corporate America?)
We can win over environmentalists if we serve their desires.
